Round 6 Cromwell Trucks British Quad Championship
Holmes tightens his grip on the British Title
The all weather sand based track of Canada Heights in Kent was the setting for the penultimate round of the British Quad Championship at the weekend. With torrential rain throughout Saturday, Sunday started with very challenging conditions and the likely hood that even title contenders could have an eventful day.
Paul Holmes entered the day with a 35 point lead over Leon Rogers in 2nd place.
Holmes made his intentions clear from the off in race 1 with a blistering surge to the first corner for the holeshot.
By the end of lap 1 Holmes was looking comfortable out front with title contenders Rogers and Walker back in 4th and 6th.
Davies and Murray Graham held firm and George Callaway was also in the mix, until first Graham's engine gave way on lap 5, followed by Callaway suffering with mechanical issues later on.
No invitation needed for Walker as he came through to grab 2nd, 5.8 secs behind Holmes in 1st.
Race 2 and a Davies Hole shot with Holmes and arch rival Mark McLernon both showing their metal as their wheels rubbed three times up the start straight. It was Holmes who took up the mantle during lap 1, with Davies, McLernon, Walker and spirited youngster Lorne Sinclair giving chase.
Both McLernon and Walker got stronger as the race progressed, but Holmes looked in control and apart from a few laps of pressure mid-race from McLernon, took the win by 6.8 secs over McLernon.
With Holmes looking unstoppable with a second holeshot in race 3, the day and perhaps Championship looked to be over. Then disaster for Holmes as he ended up caught in a deep rut on lap 1 and back to dead last!
Walker saw the possibility of taking the overall on the day and charged to the front, building an impressive lead firstly over Davies and then over McLernon. Walker took the win by 27.5 secs!
The story was behind Walker though as Holmes gave a class demonstration of riding, coming through a quality field from 17th up to 4th! It got better for Holmes as this gave him the overall on the day by 1 point over Walker, and more importantly extended his lead, going in to the Final round at Foxhills on Sunday 14th October to 50 points! As a consolation for Walker, he's up to 2nd and an almost Certainty for the U21 title!
