Holmes Dominates but Walker grabs the headlines

July 26, 2017

ACU British Cromwell Trucks Quad Championship Round 5 --Dean Moor

18-year-old Harry Walker Made the headlines on the day in the final race of Round 5, of a top quality, action packed British Championship in Dean Moor, Cumbria

Harry, Bagged his first ever British Championship race win. A massive win for Walker the youngest ever to take a British Championship Win I’d Imagine, it could be equally as massive for the Championship, as Mark McLernon, headed back to the top of the leader board….

The top two in qualifying were 1st Paul Holmes and 2nd Mark McLernon, albeit McLernon only got one qualifying lap in as a result of forgetting to attach his transponder!

Race 1, and a rare holeshot for Carl Bunce, with McLernon and Holmes giving chase.

Bunce held for 4 laps, before firstly McLernon made his move to the front, and shortly after Holmes joined him to battle it out for the lead. Lap after lap the battle continued, until a McLernon mistake let Holmes through to take the win by 2.8 secs. David Cowan came on strong in the latter stages to take 3rd over Bunce.

Emma McQuaid as a wild card also had a storming race, holding off the trio of Murray Graham, Dafydd Davies and Sheldon Seal to grab a 7th.

Race 2, and Holmes on a mission with a tremendous hole shot over McLernon and Leon Rogers, quickly building up an impressive lead. Nothing could stop Holmes from there as he cruised to the win by 11.5 secs over McLernon with Rogers in 3rd.

Was there a warning to others in Harry Walker being up to 3rd in race 2, until a puncture stopped him in his tracks? Luck hasn’t been on his side this season.

On to the final race, and with Holmes on fire in race 2, the expectation was more points in the bag for him to increase his Championship lead over McLernon, which at the start of race 3 stood at 13 points.

With his second holeshot of the day Holmes was flying with Harry Walker and wild card Sheldon Seal also storming off the line.

Then disaster for Holmes as smoke from an oil leak from his rear shock saw him fade and finish the race a lowly 15th.

Time for a Master Class from young Harry Walker who seized his chance, firstly taking the lead from Holmes, but then calmly and impressively keeping all other riders out of range for the next 10 laps with a 7-8 second buffer to bag an Impressive memorable win.  Justin Reid was 3.7 secs behind in 2nd at the finish and McLernon, who could not believe his good fortune coming home in 3rd,

Far more importantly for McLernon, Took the overall win on the day AND is back to the top of the Championship by just 1 point over Holmes!

What a final round we are in for at Canada Heights on 8th October!

On the day;

1st Mark McLernon (2,2,3), 2nd Paul Holmes (1,1,15), 3rd Leon Rogers (5,3,4)
